Anytime you want to relieve your wrists of their supporting role you can try one of the following hand and arm positions while on all fours in Table. Some of these hand and arm positions can also be used in other poses where your hands are part of the support, such as Down Dog. In any instance, as you try the use of blocks, make sure they provide adequate relief for your wrists while also providing stability for your body.

I was taught using the standard cue of ‘shoulders supported by wrists’ or ‘wrists under shoulders.’ However, not all wrists are content in that position!

On the quest for wrist contentment one possibility is to use blocks and another possibility is to explore different hand and arm positions. Play with these a little to find what works for you, knowing that what your wrists need can change from pose to pose and practice to practice.

With forearms on blocks find a hand position that feels supportive.

Alternatively place palms on blocks with thumbs gripping inner edges of the blocks.

With hands on the mat place hands a little wider than usual and one finger’s length forward so the back of the wrist aligns with top of the shoulder.

Another option is to rest on the tops of the fingers rather than on the palms. See how it feels with hands and arms in the same relationship to the shoulders as in the previous image.
